Madeline Island is a beautiful island that can only be reached by ferry (or, if you’re very lucky, by sailboat) during the summer. In the winter months, an ice highway allows cars to cross from the tiny town of Bayfield, Wisconsin. The island is a destination for sailors and canoeists who enjoy traveling between the lovely Apostle Islands.

The island is a vacation destination, but it’s also a close-knit community with all of the complexity of any town. As Lorrie Holmgren depicts in Murder at Madeline Island, not even a picture-perfect destination is perfectly safe.
