Getting to the Island in Winter
Madeline Island in winter is very different from sunny, bustling vacation village that Emily describes in the novel but hardy tourists still venture there to cross country ski or snow shoe in Big Bay State Park. Despite the cold weather, the ferry is still running from Bayfield to the island. Once the ice is thick enough, drivers and hikers can cross to the island on the Lake Superior Ice Road or take the Windsled.
